Consistency Over Motivation: Why Small Steps Build Lasting Confidence

Motivation comes and goes, but consistency quietly builds confidence, trust, and momentum. Here’s what running my second Canva workshop reminded me about showing up - even when things aren’t perfect.

Consistency Over Motivation
We’ve all had those days.
The ones where motivation seems to disappear overnight.
One day you’re full of ideas, ready to tackle everything on your to-do list. The next, you’re wondering where all that enthusiasm went.
For a long time, I thought motivation was the thing I needed to succeed. If I just waited until I felt inspired enough, confident enough, or ready enough, surely everything would flow more easily.
But over the years, I’ve discovered something much more reliable.
Consistency almost always beats motivation.
Motivation is wonderful when it shows up - but it’s also incredibly unpredictable. It comes in bursts, often disappears without warning, and isn’t something we can rely on long term.
Consistency, on the other hand, doesn’t ask us to feel inspired.
It simply asks us to take the next small step.
My Own Lesson in Consistency
This month I had the opportunity to present my second workshop - Create With Boldness, this time exploring Canva’s AI tools.
Running workshops is something I’ve wanted to do for quite a while.
Oddly enough, it’s never been the public speaking that worried me. I’m actually quite comfortable standing in front of a room and sharing what I’ve learned.
The part that scares me is the responsibility.
As a recovering perfectionist, I have a habit of believing I need to give people everything.
Every possible tip.
Every alternative option.
A workbook that answers every imaginable question.
A lesson plan that leaves nothing uncovered.
It sounds generous, but in reality, it’s exhausting.
More often than not, it leaves me frozen before I’ve even begun.
Over the years I’ve realised something important.
Most people don’t actually want everything all at once.
They want one idea they can use today.
One technique they can practise this week.
One problem solved at a time.
Ironically, the thing that helps people most is often much smaller than I imagine.
Progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about continuing.
Progress Happens One Step at a Time
Preparing this workshop reminded me that growth isn’t built by creating the perfect resource.
It’s built by showing up consistently.
Every workshop teaches me something new.
Every newsletter helps me become a better writer.
Every Canva tutorial improves the next one.
Every coaching conversation deepens my understanding of how people learn.
None of that would happen if I waited until I felt completely ready.
Experience creates knowledge.
Knowledge creates confidence.
Confidence creates courage.
And courage makes the next step just a little easier.
Confidence isn’t built by waiting. It’s built by showing up.
Consistency Builds Trust
One of the biggest lessons I’ve been learning this year is that consistency doesn’t just build skills.
It builds trust.
It builds trust with your audience because people begin to know they can rely on you.
It builds trust with your clients because they see you continue showing up and sharing your knowledge.
Perhaps most importantly…
It builds trust with yourself.
Every time you follow through on a promise - even a small one - you create another piece of evidence that says:
“I can do this.”
That evidence becomes incredibly powerful over time.
Not because every attempt is perfect.
But because every attempt reminds you that you’re capable of continuing.
What If We Stopped Waiting?
It’s easy to believe we need more confidence before we begin.
But I’ve found the opposite is usually true.
Confidence doesn’t arrive first.
It grows because we keep taking action.
That doesn’t mean life won’t get busy.
It certainly has for me.
This blog is a little later than I’d planned. Last month’s newsletter never made it out. There are plenty of things on my list that aren’t perfectly on schedule.
But none of those things mean I’ve failed.
They simply mean I’m human.
And today, I’m choosing to keep going.
Because consistency isn’t about never missing a day.
It’s about returning.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Conclusion
If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this month’s reflection, it’s this:
You don’t need to feel motivated to make progress.
You don’t need the perfect plan.
You don’t need every answer before you begin.
You simply need to take the next step.
Whether that’s opening Canva to design one page, writing one paragraph, practising one new skill, or finally starting that idea you’ve been carrying around for months…
Keep showing up.
Your future confidence is being built by the small things you choose to do today.
Because in the end, consistency builds trust - with your audience, with your clients, and perhaps most importantly, with yourself.
Small, consistent actions
create extraordinary results over time.
